MOBILE LABORATORY PROJECT

The Mobile Laboratory Project is a strategy devised by the Midlands Community College to address the problems resulting from a shortage of equipment, resources and suitably qualified Physical Science educators in High Schools in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

The Mobile Laboratory project forms part of the KZN DOE’s Provincial Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (MSTE) Strategy and was run as a three year pilot from 2006-2008 through the Mathematics, Science and Technology (MST) Unit with sponsorship from the Shuttleworth Foundation and the DG Murray Trust.

The project aims to provide academic support to PS educators and to improve learner performance in Physical Science examinations which, ultimately, will lead to an increase in the number of learners registering for Science related degrees/diplomas.

Currently, 6 trained Laboratory Technicians visit under resourced project schools with the equipment to perform the experiments necessary for the Grade 10, 11 & 12 Physical Science syllabus. The technicians set up and demonstrate the experiments and learners are given the opportunity to perform the experiments themselves and interpret any relevant data produced from the experiments.

The project is currently assisting 45 schools and 5670 learners. 6 educator workshops are conducted annually to upgrade skills and familiarise educators with the equipment and experiments.
