MATHS, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY “RECOVERY” PROJECT

This project was started in 1999. 60 black learners who have completed Grade 12 at disadvantaged schools are given the opportunity to upgrade their Mathematics and Physical Science results at MCC. Learners board at MCC for a full year and are given intensive tuition in Maths and Science. Learners are given the option of upgrading a third subject – either Life Sciences or English. The learners rewrite their Grade 12 examinations in these subjects at the end of the year with the aim of upgrading their results sufficiently to enter tertiary studies.

Learners also attend ICDL (International Computer Drivers License) classes during the year and, if successful, are issued with an internationally recognized ICDL START Certificate at the end of the course.
Learners are given intensive career guidance to enable them to make an informed decision when selecting a career and are given assistance with applications for financial aid and bursaries to study at tertiary institutions.
Learners are only required to pay R3000.00 which covers tuition, textbooks, board and lodging. We rely on donor funding to subsidise the learners in the form of bursaries to cover the actual cost of R25 000 per student, per year. Learners participating in the project have consistently achieved excellent results over the years.

We have maintained 100% pass rate since the inception of the project and 80 – 90% of our learners are accepted annually to study at tertiary level. On average our learners improve their results by three symbols, with some improving by a remarkable five symbols.

To qualify for acceptance learners must have completed and passed Grade 12. Acceptance is also based on specific criteria which include evidence of good potential based on previous matric results in maths and science, and the financial circumstances of each student.
